Prof Andrew C Smith is a male Specialist Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon.

Andrew is an academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and since 2009, Winthrop Professor of Dentistry at the University of Western Australia, Head of the School of Dentistry and Director of the Oral Health Centre of WA. He is a past president of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and past Chair of the Board of Studies at the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons.

He initially graduated from the University of Sheffield and undertook surgical training in the United Kingdom, migrating to Australia about 20 years ago to pursue his academic career by completing a research degree and expand his interests in the management of mouth cancer, facial trauma and surgical education.

Under Andrew’s leadership the School of Dentistry is undergoing major change with the introduction of a new four year Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, expansion of dental student training opportunities into rural areas of Western Australia, invigoration of the research base in the School and the development and integration of virtual reality haptic simulation teaching and learning educational tools.

In 2007 Andrew was awarded a Fellowship of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the IJ Marks and TC Adamson prize for excellence in teaching at the University of Melbourne. He is the author and co-author of over thirty-five, published, scientific research articles.

Andrew has an ethos that embraces educational support for developing countries and has been involved, not just in the delivery of pro bono surgical services to the Priest’s Hospital in Bangkok, The Kingdom of Thailand and to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital in Suva, the Fiji Islands, but also in the setting up of training programmes in both of these countries.

Andrew has two adult children, pursuing careers in archaeology and veterinary science. He is a self-confessed computer enthusiast, unable to resist gadgets of any type and proudly traces his interest back to the humble Sinclair ZX80! He is a keen traveller, tries to keep fit by walking daily.
